Kathmandu – Qatar has announced a pledge of USD 1 million to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for 2026, reaffirming its long-standing partnership with the UN’s humanitarian system.
The commitment was made by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, during the High-Level Pledging Event held at UN Headquarters in New York. The event was attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and senior UN humanitarian officials.
Sheikha Alya said the contribution reflects Qatar’s belief in CERF’s “vital role” in delivering rapid, life-saving assistance in conflict zones and climate-related disasters. She highlighted that CERF has consistently provided food, shelter, medical care, and essential services during critical moments when a swift response “means the difference between life and death.”
Qatar is among CERF’s early donors, with total contributions exceeding USD 21 million since 2006. Sheikha Alya reiterated Doha’s commitment to remain a reliable partner of the UN and emphasized the need for stronger humanitarian coordination and diplomacy to ensure timely assistance to people affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters.
