Kathmandu- Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire and Deputy Speaker Indira Rana are set to leave office after the completion of their constitutional terms.
According to Ghimire’s communications expert Shekhar Adhikari, the Speaker is also preparing to vacate the official government residence. He has already arranged alternative accommodation and will no longer attend office.
No public announcement planned
Adhikari said Ghimire has decided not to make any formal public announcement regarding his departure, as the issue of restoring the dissolved House of Representatives is currently under judicial consideration.
“He is leaving without a public announcement, as it would be procedurally inconvenient while the parliament restoration case is sub judice and the relevant authorities must respond to it,” Adhikari said.
Constitutional provision on term expiry
The Constitution of Nepal states that in the event of the dissolution of the House of Representatives, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker shall remain in office until the day before they file their candidacy for the next House of Representatives election.
The Election Commission has begun receiving closed lists of candidates for the proportional representation system today and tomorrow, ahead of the House of Representatives elections scheduled for February 21.
Term ends at midnight
In line with the constitutional provision and the election schedule, the terms of Speaker Ghimire and Deputy Speaker Rana officially ended at 12 midnight today.
