Kathmandu- The Election Commission (EC) has officially recognized the special general convention of the Nepali Congress, granting legal validity to the leadership elected under the Gagan Thapa–Bishwaprakash Sharma group.
A meeting of the Commission held on Friday decided to update the party records in line with the office bearers elected from the special general convention, concluding that the convention was conducted in accordance with the Constitution, prevailing laws, and the party statute.
With this decision, all resolutions and decisions taken by the special general convention have been formally recognized. The claim by the Sher Bahadur Deuba faction that the special general convention could not be recognized has been automatically rejected. Consequently, the old central working committee led by Deuba has become invalid, and all party actions—ranging from nominations to organizational decisions—will now be carried out under the authority of the Gagan–Bishwa leadership.
Following the Commission’s decision, supporters of President Gagan Thapa began celebrating, while cadres from both factions had gathered and staged demonstrations outside the Election Commission premises since the afternoon.
The Election Commission’s ruling has effectively settled the administrative legitimacy of the party for now. However, the decision has also opened the door for dissatisfied parties to seek legal remedy at the Supreme Court, indicating that the political and legal battle within the Nepali Congress may continue.
