Kathmandu- The Nepali Congress has formally declared party President Gagan Thapa as its candidate for prime minister in the upcoming elections.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee held on Friday at the Congress central office in Sanepa. Party Spokesperson Devraj Chalise confirmed that the proposal was endorsed by the meeting.
The proposal to name Thapa as the prime ministerial candidate was tabled by Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma. While presenting the proposal, Sharma argued that Thapa is the most suitable leader to address the country’s current political and governance challenges, urging party leaders to take the decision as a collective commitment aligned with Nepal’s unique situation.
“I request all respected members of the Central Working Committee to endorse the proposal to nominate President Gagan Thapa as the Nepali Congress’s candidate for prime minister in the upcoming elections,” Sharma said during the meeting.
Sharma expressed confidence that Thapa is capable of leading the country through changing times with a dynamic yet balanced approach. He noted that while Thapa is often seen as a vocal and assertive leader, he also possesses the maturity and restraint needed to resolve complex issues during challenging periods.
“The politics of mere excitement and passion is neither civilized nor sustainable,” Sharma said, adding that Thapa has demonstrated an ability to maintain composure and a measured tone even in adverse circumstances.
According to Sharma, the party believes that strong and decisive leadership required at the national level can be provided under Thapa’s command as prime minister.
The Congress has stated that the decision should be viewed as part of its broader effort to respond effectively to the country’s evolving political, social, and economic demands.
