Kathmandu- South Africa secured a dramatic victory over Afghanistan in a group stage match of the T20 World Cup after the contest was decided in a rare double Super Over.
The match remained evenly poised throughout, forcing the first Super Over, which also ended in a tie and led to a second Super Over to determine the winner.
In the second Super Over, South Africa were set a target of 24 runs. David Miller led the charge with a blistering 16 runs off just four balls, while Tristan Stubbs contributed seven runs from two deliveries to post a competitive total under pressure.
Chasing 24 in the decisive Super Over, Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz mounted a fierce counterattack. He smashed three consecutive sixes to bring Afghanistan back into contention, dramatically shifting momentum in his team’s favour. With six runs required off the final delivery, the match was on a knife-edge.
South African spinner Keshav Maharaj first bowled a wide, reducing the equation to five runs from the final legal ball. Gurbaz, in full rhythm after his three towering sixes, looked poised to complete a remarkable comeback. However, Maharaj held his nerve and dismissed Gurbaz on the last ball, sealing a thrilling win for South Africa.
