Kathmandu- Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has formally conveyed to party workers that he intends to contest the upcoming House of Representatives election from his home district, Dadeldhura, stating that this will be his final electoral bid.
Deuba communicated this decision during a meeting with Bhuvan Bhatta, a central committee member of the Nepali Congress and youth leader from Dadeldhura, at his residence in Maharajgunj on Sunday. According to Bhatta, Deuba expressed his commitment to remain a direct candidate from Dadeldhura for the election scheduled for Falgun 21.
“I spoke to the Speaker today, and he said for the last time that I am in favor of contesting the House of Representatives elections from Dadeldhura,” Bhatta quoted Deuba as saying in a meeting.
Bhatta, who has been advocating for the party to promote younger leadership, had told Deuba that the final decision on contesting the election should rest with him. Despite speculation that the former prime minister might step back from electoral politics, Deuba informed the youth delegation that he wishes to run for Parliament from Dadeldhura one last time and requested their support.
Deuba has maintained a firm electoral stronghold in Dadeldhura, having been elected from the constituency in 2048, 2051, 2056, 2064, 2070, 2074, and 2079. The Nepali Congress is currently holding regional-level meetings across the country to recommend candidates for both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly. Preparations are ongoing to propose Deuba’s name as the candidate from Dadeldhura.
Meanwhile, President Deuba reaffirmed that the party’s 15th General Convention will be held from December 26 to 28 as per the schedule endorsed by the Central Committee. He also assured the youth leaders that he is positive about ensuring meaningful representation of young members in the party structure and in the upcoming general elections.
