Sydney– At least 10 people were killed in a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, according to local media reports. Police have confirmed multiple fatalities and said two people are currently in custody in connection with the incident.
The shooting occurred during a gathering of members of the Jewish community who had assembled at Bondi Beach earlier in the evening to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.
Australia’s public broadcaster ABC reported that at least 16 people were taken to hospital, while several others were treated at the scene. Emergency services responded in large numbers, and the area was sealed off as police conducted security operations and investigations.
Police have not yet released details on the motive behind the attack or the condition of those hospitalised. Authorities said further information would be provided as the investigation progresses.
Reacting to the incident, Robert Gregory, head of the Australian Jewish Association, described the shooting as “a tragedy but entirely foreseeable.” Speaking to AFP, he said the federal government had been repeatedly warned about security risks faced by the Jewish community but had failed to take sufficient protective measures.
The Australian government has not yet issued a detailed response to the criticism. The incident has sent shockwaves across the country and prompted renewed concerns over public safety and the protection of religious gatherings.
