Kathmandu, Dec 21: Nepal hosted a special side event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to mark the second observance of World Meditation Day.
The event, titled “Awakening the Mind: Pathways to Peace, Health, and Harmony,” was jointly organized by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations and the Jeevan Vigyan Foundation. It was held on December 19, ahead of the official World Meditation Day observance.
Representing Nepal, Jeevan Vigyan Foundation representatives LP Bhanu Sharma and Ramesh Prasad Nepal spoke on the relevance of Jeevan Vigyan—described as the science of living—and its contribution to promoting peace, harmony, and well-being through yoga and meditation practices.
Speakers at the event emphasized the growing importance of meditation in fostering inner peace, enhancing emotional resilience, and nurturing conscious leadership at a time of increasing global challenges.
The programme was part of the United Nations’ official observance of World Meditation Day, which was declared through a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 6, 2024. Nepal was a member of the core group of countries—along with India, Sri Lanka, Andorra, and Mexico—that worked towards the adoption of the resolution.
The event was attended by United Nations Under-Secretary-General Atul Khare, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Lok Bahadur Thapa, President of the Jeevan Vigyan Foundation Devi Guruma, as well as representatives from various countries and international communities.
According to a press release issued by the Jeevan Vigyan Foundation, the event contributed to raising global awareness about spiritual practices such as yoga, meditation, and samadhi, traditions rooted in ancient Nepali civilization.
