Kathmandu- The Nepali Congress has decided not to repeat any leaders who previously became lawmakers through the proportional representation (PR) system, opting instead to prioritize new candidates in the upcoming elections.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s Performance Committee, which is currently engaged in finalizing names for the closed list of candidates under the proportional representation system for both the House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies.
No repeat from past PR elections
According to the decision, leaders who were elected as members of the House of Representatives or Provincial Assemblies through the proportional list in any of the elections held in 2064, 2070, 2074, or 2079 BS will not be nominated again under the PR category.
“A clear decision has been made that those who have already served as lawmakers through proportional representation in previous elections will not be included this time,” a Performance Committee member told Nepalpulse. “The party will give an opportunity to new faces who have not yet had access to elected positions.”
Ongoing meeting to finalize closed list
The Performance Committee meeting is still in progress and is focused on selecting candidates for the closed list to be submitted to the Election Commission under the proportional representation system.
Party sources say the move is aimed at internal reform, expanding representation, and addressing long-standing criticism that proportional seats are repeatedly monopolized by the same leaders.
The finalized PR list is expected to be submitted within the deadline set by the Election Commission.
