Kathmandu— Cardiologist Dr Kunjang Sherpa has been elected Vice-Chairman of the Nepal Medical Council (NMC). Dr Sherpa, who currently serves at Bir Hospital, was previously a member of the Council.
According to the final vote count completed on Sunday, Dr Sherpa secured 5,234 votes, defeating his closest rival Dr Gurusharan Shah, who received 4,350 votes. Another contender for the vice-chair position, Ajay Singh Thapa, obtained 1,844 votes.
Alongside the vice-chairman, eight members of the Council have also been elected. Dr Chhabilal Panthi received the highest number of votes among members with 4,857 votes, followed by Dr Sarika Goit with 4,479 votes, Dr Dipendra Pandey with 4,015 votes, and Dr Yobin Kumar Yadav with 3,648 votes.
Other elected members include Dr Asmita Pokharel (3,404 votes), Dr Samrat Parajuli (3,282 votes), Nina Rai (3,111 votes), and Dr Robin Basnet (3,072 votes).
Elections were held outside the Kathmandu Valley on December 4 and 5, and within the Valley on December 11 and 12. A total of 33 doctors contested for eight member positions.
The newly elected vice-chairman and members will serve a four-year term.
