Kathmandu- The physical reconstruction required after the damage caused during the Gen-Z Movement on Bhadra 23 and 24 is estimated to cost Rs 36.25 billion, according to a government assessment report.
A five-member committee formed by the Council of Ministers on October 20, under the coordination of the Secretary of the National Planning Commission, has submitted a detailed report assessing the damage caused during the protests and outlining a reconstruction action plan for public infrastructure.
According to the report, an estimated Rs 36.3 billion is required for the reconstruction and repair of damaged public-sector buildings, as well as for the purchase and repair of vehicles and other physical assets. Of the total amount, Rs 19.98 billion is earmarked for rebuilding damaged buildings, Rs 6.16 billion for vehicles, and Rs 10.14 billion for other physical assets.
The committee’s assessment shows that the Genji Movement caused a total material loss of Rs 84.45 billion nationwide. This loss is equivalent to 1.38 percent of Nepal’s gross domestic product and 4.30 percent of the total budget for the current fiscal year.
Sector-wise, 53 percent of the damage occurred in the government and public sectors, 40 percent in the private sector, and the remaining 7 percent in community and other sectors.
Provincial data indicate that Bagmati Province suffered the highest level of damage, accounting for 66.5 percent of the total loss. In monetary terms, losses were estimated at Rs 56.23 billion in Bagmati Province, Rs 10.24 billion in Koshi Province, Rs 4.92 billion in Madhesh Province, Rs 4.10 billion in Gandaki Province, Rs 5.99 billion in Lumbini Province, Rs 620 million in Karnali Province, and Rs 2.40 billion in Sudurpaschim Province.
The report further states that disruptions during the movement resulted in losses of approximately Rs 13.87 billion in the production of goods and services. In terms of employment, 2,999 people were directly affected, with 2,353 individuals losing their jobs entirely.
A total of 2,671 buildings were damaged during the protests, of which nearly 80 percent were public buildings. The breakdown of material losses includes Rs 39.31 billion in building damage, Rs 12.93 billion in vehicles, Rs 20.36 billion in other physical assets, Rs 2.81 billion in cash and valuables, and Rs 9.26 billion in other temporary assets and personal property.
The report also documents human casualties during the protests. A total of 77 people lost their lives, including 73 men and four women. Notably, 39 of the deceased were between the ages of 13 and 28.
The government is expected to use the report as the basis for mobilising resources and prioritising reconstruction efforts in the coming months.
