Kathmandu- Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has reported a net profit of more than Rs 13.5 billion in the last fiscal year 2081/82, marking one of the strongest financial performances in its history and signaling a shift toward clean energy, diversification, and possible public share issuance.
Making the financial details public on the occasion of the corporation’s 56th anniversary, Executive Director Dr. Chandika Prasad Bhatta said NOC earned a net profit of Rs 13.67 billion from a total turnover of Rs 367 billion during the last fiscal year. The corporation also contributed around Rs 124 billion in revenue to the state during the same period.
Dr. Bhatta attributed the corporation’s improved financial health primarily to the Automatic Pricing System introduced in 2071 BS, calling it the most significant milestone in NOC’s institutional history. According to him, automatic price adjustment, combined with expanded infrastructure, has enabled the corporation to operate on a commercially sustainable footing.
In recent years, NOC has made notable progress in infrastructure development. The 72-kilometer Motihari–Amlekhgunj petroleum pipeline and a 17,000-kiloliter storage facility in Amlekhgunj are now operational. These projects have reduced transportation costs and allowed consumers to receive fuel at approximately Rs 2 per liter cheaper, the corporation said.
Similarly, a 3,600-kiloliter aviation fuel storage facility has been completed in Pokhara. On the technology front, NOC has installed flow meters at Amlekhgunj, Bhairahawa, and Thankot depots to curb fuel theft and leakage. The introduction of an ERP-based mobile ordering system for fuel dealers has also reduced human intervention and increased transparency.
Looking ahead, Dr. Bhatta said the corporation is preparing to move beyond conventional petroleum trade toward clean energy and diversification. From this year, NOC will begin implementing the government policy of blending ethanol with petrol. In collaboration with Kathmandu University, the corporation is also working toward the commercialization of green hydrogen, aligning with Nepal’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045.
On the infrastructure side, discussions have been initiated with Indian authorities regarding the construction of Siliguri–Charali and Motihari–Sarlahi LPG pipelines. Meanwhile, fuel depots located in security-sensitive areas such as Sinamangal, Bhairahawa, and Dhangadhi are set to be relocated, while the process of building a new depot in Karnali Province—currently without any depot—has been initiated.
Dr. Bhatta also said NOC is studying the possibility of converting the corporation into a public limited company and issuing shares to the general public. The corporation is further exploring the introduction of large 450-kilogram LPG cylinders and expanding petrol pumps to 37 remote locations to reduce dependence on expensive bottled fuel.
Despite its expanding operations, NOC currently distributes around 7.5 million liters of petroleum products and 1,500 tons of LPG daily across the country with about 700 permanent and 300 contract employees. On average, one employee serves nearly 20,000 consumers, Dr. Bhatta noted, praising staff dedication.
He also expressed gratitude to Indian Oil Corporation, petroleum entrepreneurs, transporters, and the media for their continued support, reaffirming his commitment to building a more competitive, transparent, and modern Nepal Oil Corporation.
The anniversary program was attended by Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Anil Kumar Sinha, Secretaries Dr. Ram Prasad Ghimire and Madhusudan Burlakoti, and Public Service Commission Chairman Madhav Prasad Regmi.
