Kathmandu— The Election Commission has rejected the candidacy of Resham Chaudhary, patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NAUPA), who had filed his nomination from Kailali constituency number 1 for the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for Falgun 21.
The decision was taken after the commission deliberated on a complaint challenging Chaudhary’s legal eligibility. The complaint was based on Chaudhary’s conviction and sentencing in the Tikapur massacre case, despite his subsequent presidential pardon. After discussion, the commission concluded that his candidacy did not meet the legal requirements and therefore cancelled it.
At the same time, the commission has dismissed the complaint filed against former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, who is contesting from Rautahat-1. According to the commission, the allegations raised against Nepal could not be substantiated.
Similarly, complaints lodged against Rajiv Khatri of the Rastriya Swatantra Party and Januka Pathak of the Nepal Janasewa Party, both candidates from Bhaktapur-2, have also been dismissed due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
However, the Election Commission has stated that a final decision is yet to be made regarding the complaint filed against Lal Bikram Thapa, a candidate from Sunsari-2. Discussions on that matter are still ongoing, and the commission has said a conclusion will be reached after further deliberation.
The commission’s decisions mark a crucial phase in the election process, as the preliminary list of candidates is being finalized following the review of complaints.
