Kathmandu- Five provincial presidents and 47 district presidents of the Nepali Congress have come out in open opposition to the special general convention proposed by party General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma, calling instead for a unified focus on the upcoming House of Representatives elections.
Issuing a joint statement on the eve of the proposed special general convention, the provincial and district presidents urged party leaders and cadres to act with greater responsibility toward safeguarding the constitution and ensuring political stability, rather than engaging in internal assemblies, gatherings, or ceremonial events.

The signatories emphasized that the country is currently passing through a sensitive political phase, marked by recent political developments, security concerns, and the impending federal parliamentary elections scheduled for Falgun 21. In such a context, they said, party unity and electoral preparedness must take precedence.
“In this serious political situation, the Nepali Congress urges everyone to focus actively on the Falgun 21 elections with a greater sense of responsibility for the protection of the constitution and the political outcome of the country, instead of getting involved in other gatherings and ceremonies,” the statement read.
The leaders further noted that the schedule for the party’s 15th Regular General Convention—set for Baisakh 28 to 31—was already endorsed by the Central Working Committee on Poush 18, and that the formal process toward the regular convention is currently underway.
Highlighting organizational and legal provisions, the provincial and district presidents argued that the authority to call a special general convention rests solely with the central leadership. They maintained that neither the legal framework nor the political environment is conducive to holding a special general convention at this time.
“Given that only the central level has the authority to convene a special general convention, and considering the lack of a suitable environment, the Central Working Committee should focus on preventing party division through dialogue and consensus, while making every effort to strengthen unity within the party,” the statement said.
The intervention by a large number of provincial and district leaders is being viewed as a significant pushback against the initiative led by the two general secretaries. It also reflects growing concern within the party organization that internal disputes could weaken the Nepali Congress ahead of the crucial parliamentary elections.
