Kathmandu- Seven Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) posts in Nepal Police have remained vacant for more than a month and a half, as promotions have yet to be finalized despite multiple senior officers being elevated to higher ranks.
Five SSPs—Bhupendra Khatri, Sanuram Bhattarai, Om Adhikari, Shekhar Khanal and Abhinarayan Kafle—were recommended for promotion to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) on Kartik 9 and received their insignia a week later. Another SSP, Vishwa Adhikari, was recommended for DIG promotion on Mangsir 1, further increasing the number of vacant SSP posts. During the same period, SSP Prakash Ranabhat resigned from service, and his resignation was accepted.
With these developments, the number of vacant SSP positions in Nepal Police has reached seven. However, no promotions have been made to fill the posts so far. Police sources say the delay is linked to preparations to promote two SSPs from the technical sector by adjusting their posts to the district level. The Council of Ministers has already approved conducting an Organizational Management and Survey (O&M) process for this purpose.
A source at Police Headquarters said the promotion process has slowed as work is underway to align the technical posts before forwarding the proposal to the Council of Ministers. The Human Resources and Administration Department of Nepal Police has stated that preparations are in place to proceed with promotions once the post adjustment is completed. A similar approach was earlier adopted by the Armed Police Force, which added additional DIG and SSP posts through post matching.
Around two dozen SSPs are currently competing for promotion. Those in contention include Bhuvaneshwor Tiwari, Rishiram Kandel, Surendra Prasad Kafle, Amarendra Bahadur Singh, Shyam Singh Chaudhary, Nakul Pokhrel, Padam Bahadur Bista, Basudev Khatiwada, Prajit KC, Yogendra Singh Thapa, Mahendra Kumar Shrestha, Dilip Ghimire, Birendra Bahadur Shahi, Rajkumar Silwal, Subash Chandra Bohara, Janak Bahadur Shahi, Rameshwor Karki, Chakraraj Joshi, Arjun Prasad Timilsina and Ramesh Pandit.
