Kathmandu—The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), which had gained momentum following the confirmation of elections, witnessed a sharp decline on Tuesday, shedding more than 42 points amid broad-based selling pressure.
After surging by 57 points on Sunday and undergoing a marginal correction of around 3 points on Monday, the market fell sharply on Tuesday. The NEPSE index dropped by 42.58 points, or 1.53 percent, compared to the previous trading day, closing at 2,726.51 points.
Out of the total companies traded during the session, share prices of 224 companies declined, while only 34 companies recorded gains. The share prices of two companies remained unchanged, indicating a market largely dominated by sellers.
The downturn was also reflected in the Sensitive Index, which measures the performance of large-cap companies. The index declined by 7.37 points to settle at 464.46 points. Among the 13 sub-indices, 12 ended the session in the red, while one sub-index remained stable.
Along with the fall in indices, trading activity also weakened. After recording a turnover of more than Rs 16 billion in the previous session, total transactions on Tuesday declined to just over Rs 14 billion.
According to NEPSE data, a total of 32.62 million shares of 333 companies were traded during the day. These transactions generated a total turnover of approximately Rs 14.16 billion, reflecting reduced investor participation amid the market correction.
