Kathmandu- Dr Ramji Ram has withdrawn his name from the proportional representation (PR) closed list of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), becoming the latest figure to step aside amid growing criticism over PR candidate selections.
Announcing his decision through a Facebook post, Dr Ramji Ram said he chose to withdraw voluntarily, placing the “dignity, self-respect and long-term representation of the Dalit community” at the center of his decision.
“Keeping the pride, self-respect, and long-term representation of the Dalit community at the forefront, I hereby inform you that I have decided to voluntarily withdraw my name from the proportional closed list,” he wrote.
Dr Ramji Ram further stated that meaningful social change is not confined to holding parliamentary office. Emphasising his lifelong commitment to social justice, he said he would continue to raise issues related to equality and inclusion from outside formal political structures.
“I do not believe that change is possible only by sitting in the chair of parliament. It is my life’s practice to believe that the fight for justice can be carried out from multiple fronts of social consciousness,” his statement read.
His withdrawal comes at a time when criticism of proportional representation nominees has intensified on social media, particularly regarding inclusivity, transparency and internal party decision-making. As public scrutiny grows, more individuals listed under the PR system have begun withdrawing their candidacies.
The development adds pressure on political parties, including the RSP, to address concerns surrounding proportional representation and ensure that marginalized communities are represented with credibility and respect.
