Kathmandu— Senior Nepali Congress leaders Gururaj Ghimire and Pradeep Poudel have formally filed their candidacies for the post of General Secretary at the party’s second Special General Convention, currently underway at Bhrikutimandap.
According to sources from the Election Committee, both leaders submitted their nominations as the convention moved into a crucial phase marked by open competition for top leadership positions.
Meanwhile, Gagan Thapa, the incumbent General Secretary, has emerged as the sole candidate for the post of Party President. Election officials confirmed that no other nominations were filed for the presidency, making Thapa’s election uncontested unless developments change before finalization.
Failed Talks With Deuba, Legal Consultations Ongoing
Prior to the filing of nominations, Gagan Thapa and fellow General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma held discussions with Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Wednesday morning in an effort to reach a political consensus. However, the talks failed to yield an agreement.
Following the unsuccessful negotiations, Thapa and Sharma have begun consultations with legal experts, reflecting internal concerns over procedural and constitutional aspects of the Special General Convention.
Candidate List to Be Made Public
According to Election Committee Coordinator Senior Advocate Sitaram KC, the final list of candidates for all positions will be made public at 1:00 pm. The nomination registration process for all office-bearer positions has now formally concluded.
The leadership contest is being closely watched as the Nepali Congress navigates deep internal divisions, with the outcome expected to significantly influence the party’s future direction and national political landscape.
